Friday, 30 October 09 | 202 hits | send | print Medan – About 12 areas in North Sumatra are suspected as sources for human trafficking. Many victims from these areas are being trafficked to various areas and even abroad.

The head of North Sumatra Women and Children Empowerment and Family Planning Bureau, Emmy Suryana Lubis said that the 12 areas are namely Medan, Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, Simalungun, Binjai, Pematang Siantar, Asahan, Batubara, Tanjung Balai, Langkat, Tebing Tinggi and Labuhan Batu.

“The susceptibility of trafficking cases to take place in these areas are mainly due to poverty, low education and high competition in the labour market,” says Emmy in the Seminar and workshop on the Socialization of Guidance for Child Protection for Trafficked Children in Madani Hotel, Medan, on Wednesday (28/10/2009).

Other factors are the pessimistic of the family and the community or poor awareness in understanding the trafficking. Some of the victim, generally, dreamed about decent live but have little or do not have information.

The position of North Sumatra, alleged Emmy, is as the sending, transit and receiving area for trafficking. Therefore, all parties are urged to be aware of the potential of trafficking in 2008 - 78 cases.

In the same occasion, the Executive Director of KKSP Foundation (the Education and Information Center for Child Rights), Muhammad Jailani said that the escalating number of trafficking cases is very alarming, but on the other hand, the treatment for the victims should be the noticed.

“The treatment on the victims should take the aspect of trauma, their age and future in to consideration. Therefore, the treatment and handling on the victims should take all aspects which emphasize their rights into account,” says Jailani. (*)
