Children in West Aceh will have Children Congress
Meulaboh - Celebrating the National Children Day on July 23, 2010, KKSP Foundation (Education and Information Center for Child Rights) in Aceh and Word Vision Indonesia (WVI) of West Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) will organize a serial of activities – children congress, children dialogue with Chairman of West Aceh parliament and forming the regional children forum. The congress which is planned to be held for 2 days (17 – 18 July 2010) will involve 50 children representatives from every village and sub-district in West Aceh.
The Project Coordinator for KKSP in Aceh, Taufik Hidayat Harahap, said that the congress is aimed to improve children’s understanding and awareness on the importance of child rights fulfillment, respect and protecting by state, the community and parents as mandated in by the Law No 23/ 2002 on Child protection.
“Through this congress, children will discuss problems they faced and share them to the policy-makers in West Aceh to be followed up,” he says.
Taufik said that all these years, the child problems in West Aceh have not been taking into account seriously by the local government. Even the draft of regional regulation (Raqan) on child protection that has been revised into the draft of regional regulation on protection for children who become victims of violence is still hanging and uncertain when it will be discussed by the legislative of West Aceh parliament.
In addition, the congress will also provide a huge space for child participation for the children to be involved in the development of their home.
“We all agreed that every child has the rights to express their views and be heard, however the current development planning does not take the children’s views into account. In the future, children should be involved; they will learn about responsibility about their village, sub-district and district. In the future, the time has come for West Aceh to declare itself as “Child-friendly city,” says Taufik.
It is expected that the congress will initiate the formation of West Aceh Children Forum which declared by children in the dialogue with the West Aceh parliaments members planned on July 22, 2010 in the yard of West Aceh parliament. (abd)
